For ten years, Trenton Youth Wrestling & Learning Center has used the sport of wrestling as a vehicle for something much larger: helping young people develop the confidence, character, and resilience they need to succeed in life.
That mission was on full display during the organization's 10th Anniversary Celebration, an evening that brought together athletes, coaches, supporters, community leaders, and friends from across the region to celebrate a decade of impact in the City of Trenton.
For many in attendance, the event was defined by a single feeling: love. Love for the young people who are at the center of the organization's mission, love for the sport of wrestling, and love for the relationships and opportunities that wrestling helps create.
Since its founding, Trenton Youth Wrestling & Learning Center has grown from a program serving a small number of students in one or two schools into a year-round organization operating in six schools and its own dedicated training facility. Along the way, more than 1,000 boys and girls have participated in programs designed to teach discipline, courage, character, and perseverance.
The anniversary celebration also served as a reminder that TYWLC's success extends well beyond wrestling. Every practice, mentoring opportunity, educational initiative, and community partnership is built around a simple goal: helping young people feel seen, supported, and capable of achieving more than they thought possible.
The evening was also an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary leadership of Ray Bethea and the Bethea family. In a surprise announcement, guests learned that the organization's new home will be named the Bethea Family Wrestling & Learning Center, honoring a family whose commitment, service, and leadership have become synonymous with excellence throughout the Trenton community.
The celebration was not only a reflection on the past but also an investment in the future. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the event raised more than $150,000 to help sustain and expand programs for Trenton youth. Those funds will support wrestling opportunities, educational initiatives, mentorship programs, and other resources that help children develop the skills necessary for long-term success.
As the organization looks ahead, its mission remains unchanged. Every decision, every partnership, and every new initiative is guided by what is best for the boys and girls of Trenton. The goal is not simply to produce better athletes, but to help build stronger students, stronger families, and a stronger community.
Ten years after its founding, Trenton Youth Wrestling & Learning Center continues to demonstrate what is possible when a community comes together around its young people. The momentum created over the past decade is only the beginning, and the organization remains committed to creating opportunities, building character, and empowering the next generation of Trenton leaders.
